September Book Club: Raining Men and Corpses by Anne R. Tan
Raining Men and Corpses by Anne R. Tan
Raining Men and Corpses is a delightful mystery with a healthy dose of romance. When graduate student Raina Sun’s luck turns sour and her advisor is found murdered, she has no choice but to put on her thinking cap and go sleuthing. With the help of her ex-husband Matthew (now a cop) and her wise-cracking friend Eden, a reporter, Raina sets off to uncover the truth behind his untimely death.
The novel really shines due to its endearing characters. Sassy grandma “Popo” is like a Chinese version of Stephanie Plum’s Grandma Mazur, which is high praise from me! With memorable characters who feel real thanks to their depth and heart, this cozy mystery is sure to be a hit for fans of romance or crime novels alike.
The story also does an excellent job of blending together mystery and romance – you’ll find yourself rooting for Raina and Matthew as they get closer to solving the case while trying not to get sidetracked by love.
If you’re looking for an exciting cozy mystery series with lots of laughs thrown in, this one should be at the top of your list! Book #1 (Raining Men & Corpses) is free from Amazon. There are 11 books in this series, and Hoopla has it available in ebook and audiobook.
Anne R. Tan also writes the Lucy Fong Mystery series and the Cedar Woods Mysteries, all of which feature Chinese-American amateur sleuths dealing with love, family, and life while solving murders.
Kelly Brakenhoff is the author of 15 books and a seasoned ASL interpreter. She splits her writing energy between two series: cozy mysteries set on a college campus and children’s books featuring Duke the Deaf Dog.
Parents, kids, and teachers love the children’s books and activity guides because they introduce ASL and the Deaf community through fun, engaging stories. And if you enjoy a smart female sleuth, want to learn more about Deaf culture, or have ever lived in a place where livestock outnumber people, the Cassandra Sato Mystery series will have you connecting the dots faster than a group project coming together the night before it’s due.
A proud mom to four adults, head of the dog-snuggling department, and grandma to a growing brood of perfectly behaved grandkids, Kelly and her husband call Nebraska home.
