May Book Club: Animal Climate Heroes by Alison Pearce Stevens

Animal Climate Heroes by Alison Pearce Stevens

For kids ages 8-12

The first thing that struck me in Animal Climate Heroes was Jason Ford’s superhero-themed illustrations. They’re whimsical and fun, yet scientifically accurate, striking the perfect balance between entertainment and education.

Alison Pearce Stevens approaches the daunting subject of climate change with a creative twist, framing it as an epic showdown between the supervillain (climate change) and our heroes (animals), alongside their human allies. It’s a clever setup that instantly grabs your attention, making a complex topic both accessible and engaging for young readers.

Stevens has a gift for breaking down intricate science into bite-sized, digestible pieces. Biology and chemistry, subjects that might typically send kids running, are presented in such a way that they spark curiosity rather than intimidation. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t be engrossed by terms like poo-nadoo, snot, and goopy poop? These unorthodox, yet brilliant choices keep the giggles coming while the pages turn.

I also enjoyed the surprise ending. (Well, it was a surprise to me, but maybe unintentional.) Stevens invites readers to become part of the story, transforming them into climate heroes. The book closes with actionable steps kids can take, making the journey from understanding to action clear and straightforward. It’s an empowering conclusion that teaches young readers they have the power to make a difference in their world, one small step at a time.

Making science accessible and fun is a challenge. By framing the story as an epic battle, the author and illustrator definitely pass the test.
