April Book Club: Body in 3B by Eryn Scott
If you, like me, are a fan of the crazy twists and turns of Only Murders in the Building, then Eryn Scott’s Body in 3B is about to become your next must read. From the moment I laid eyes on the cover, I knew I was in for a treat—a mystery that promises suspense and a hearty dose of eccentricity, much like the TV show on Hulu.
Body in 3B takes us to the Morrissey building in Seattle, a place teeming with quirks and secrets behind every door. Scott has skillfully populated this world with a cast of characters so colorful and distinct that keeping track of them was a breeze. There’s something inherently comforting about diving into a story where each character stands out, offering their own slice of intrigue to the overarching mystery.
Meg Dawson is a fascinating protagonist. She’s put her art career on pause for reasons not yet unveiled, setting the stage for deeper exploration in future installments. Her complicated relationship dynamics with her childhood crush Laurie and close friend Riley hint at juicy revelations to come, weaving a personal thread through the mystery that keeps you hooked.
But here’s where Body in 3B takes a delightful detour from its television counterpart—Meg’s unique ability to communicate with ghosts. The Morrissey isn’t just an old building; it’s a character in its own right, filled with spectral residents who are more than eager to chip in on the sleuthing. This unexpected twist adds supernatural layers to the mystery-solving journey.
Eryn Scott has kicked off what promises to be an entertaining series with Body in 3B, blending the charm of eccentric ensemble casts with the allure of the supernatural. With three books already out, I’m eager to see where Meg’s adventures will take her next. If you’re in the mood for a mystery with warm friendships and quirky communities then this book is for you.
You also might remember the engaging storytelling found in Eryn’s Pepper Brooks mysteries I’ve raved about here before. (see review for Literally Dead)
Kelly Brakenhoff is the author of 15 books and a seasoned ASL interpreter. She splits her writing energy between two series: cozy mysteries set on a college campus and children’s books featuring Duke the Deaf Dog.
Parents, kids, and teachers love the children’s books and activity guides because they introduce ASL and the Deaf community through fun, engaging stories. And if you enjoy a smart female sleuth, want to learn more about Deaf culture, or have ever lived in a place where livestock outnumber people, the Cassandra Sato Mystery series will have you connecting the dots faster than a group project coming together the night before it’s due.
A proud mom to four adults, head of the dog-snuggling department, and grandma to a growing brood of perfectly behaved grandkids, Kelly and her husband call Nebraska home.
